Unexpected Wall Hangings for the Bedroom

Although fleur de lis wall decor and metal wall decorations look beautiful when displayed in the bedroom as wall art, you should never feel limited only by what is expected. There are many different types of wall hangings that you can use in a bedroom that are not only beautiful, but also sometimes unexpected and surprising. Try adding your own personal touch to the bedroom by decorating the walls with unusual wall hangings.

Maps of the World

Large maps can be used very effectively to add a sophisticated look to the bedroom. Men in particular often enjoy displaying a map of places they have been, a favorite city, or even beautiful vintage maps that border on being collector's items. In most cases you will find that these maps are too large for any type of common picture frame. To hang a map, you can either get a custom frame made, or simply use push-pins to attach the map to the wall. You can add interest to the map as well by using additional push-pins to attach post cards, vacation photos, or other mementos from the area portrayed in the map, especially if it was a vacation destination.

Keep Track of Time with a Calendar

Adding a unique calendar to the bedroom wall can be a beautiful and useful variety of wall hanging. There are calendars available in almost every size, color, style and subject matter, many of which have absolutely stunning art work and photography. Many quick print shops also provide the ability to create your own photo calendars, which can be a nice way of displaying photos of the children, your favorite pet, or any other favorite photos on your calendar.

Display a Collection

If you collect items such as post cards, postage stamps, vintage magazines, or any other type of easily framed materials, you can use these items to create a unique wall display in the bedroom. If these items are valuable or easily damaged, displaying them in a frame or shadowbox is generally the best choice, so that they are protected. Arrange several framed collections on one wall to create an interesting display. Not only will you get more enjoyment from your treasured collection, but it will also add a decorative and unique touch to your bedroom walls.

Decorate with Quilts and Rugs

In addition to the tapestry wall hangings that are often popular as wall decorations, you can also use quilts and rugs to add interest to a wall. If you have an heirloom quilt, or a hand-hooked or braided rug that has been in the family for years, but you don't want to use it on the floor to avoid it becoming worn, using it as a wall hanging can be an effective way of enjoying it. Or, start a new family tradition by creating a new quilt or rug specifically for your wall. Quilts can be especially beautiful when used as a wall hanging in a bedroom. You could choose to make a small display quilt to display on a rod, or use a wall mounted quilt hanger to display a full sized quilt. Either way, it will add a lot of color and design to the room.
