Living Room Decorating: How to Make a Large Living Room Feel Cozy

Many people desire large living rooms with plenty of space for entertaining friends and enjoying quality time with family. Large living rooms and other living areas naturally feel more adequate and spacious, but living rooms that are too large are not always cozy and inviting. It is possible to have the best of both worlds with the right color choices, clever furniture arranging, and a few other decorating tips and tricks. If your living room is too large to feel cozy and inviting, consider the following ways to make it feel more comfortable and more welcoming than ever.

Color Options

Cool light colors naturally enlarge the look of a space, and warm hues make a large space feel cozy and welcoming. Instead of painting or papering a living room in neutral or cool light colors, consult the warmer side of the color wheel and choose a color or a grouping of colors that will make the room feel warm and inviting. A rich shade of apricot or gold will help draw the walls inward while providing a cozy atmosphere. Visit a local home improvement store, and take home sample jars of paint that will enable you to choose just the right colors to make your living room look as warm as it naturally feels.

Wall Decor Ideas

In addition to warm wall colors in a large living room, the addition of metal wall art and wall decor can really add warmth and make it feel more inviting. Consider selecting a work of metal wall art that includes warm colors that coordinate well with the living room. Metal wall art that includes rich reds, yellows, and shades of orange are outstanding choices when striving to make a large living room feel cozy. Whether your decorating style is traditional or contemporary, you will find just the right metal wall art to dress up the walls and improve the overall appearance and ambience of the living room.

Floor Coverings

When living room floors are expansive the space can look and feel cold and uninviting. To make the living room feel warm and cozy from the ceiling to the floor, select a large area rug that will break up the space. Designate a seating area for conversation, and use the rug as the central point of arrangement. Choose a patterned area rug that will add interest and appeal to the area while coordinating with the colors and style of the living room. A soft rug will feel warm and cozy beneath the feet, and it will help the area look as cozy as it feels.

Clever Furniture Arranging

After selecting an area rug when creating a cozy space for conversation, arrange the furnishings with conversation in mind. The walking path in a large room should be around the backsides of furniture along the perimeter of the room instead of across the center. Face chairs toward a sofa or loveseat arranged around an area rug to make the composition favorable for conversing with family and friends. Even a very large area can be arranged in ways that will make the home feel exceptionally cozy while conveying an atmosphere of friendliness to all who enter.

In my case, my living room/kitchen/workspace is tiny, I think I probably need ideas on how to make it look a bit less inviting! Thanks for sharing your hub, great advice.

Charlotte, If you are working with a tiny space edit, edit, edit, and try to have each piece of furniture serve double duty, like a storage benche.

I am trying to redo my large living room, It is 450 sq ft and is rectangular in shape with a fire place right in the middle of the long wall, we are not replacing the carpet, which is a light blue, but we are painting, I was thinking of using a beige color, one of the darker shades. If I already have carpet, would it be tacky to use an area rug to disgnate a sitting space?

Hi Kate --- Your wall color choice will perfectly match the light blue carpet. Using area rugs over carpets is really a great way to define seating areas. So, don’t worry it won’t look tacky at all.

Thanks for reading and good luck with your redecoration project.
