Designing a Living Room in Post-Modern Style

Without even knowing it, many homeowners have fallen into creating spaces in their home that reflect a post-modern style. This eclectic style features both form and functionality, but it also relies heavily on a whimsical and varied feel. Lines are not always straight, angles are sometimes slightly askew, and ornamentation is heavy in the design. For many, this style of decorating comes naturally and without any thought, as it is such an eclectic way of decorating. If you are searching for a unique way to decorate your living room, consider using a post-modern style to make it truly one of a kind.

Shapes and Sizes

In post-modern style, the shapes and sizes of your living room furniture is important, but it can vary greatly. A modern and contemporary sofa can easily be paired with a traditional wing back chair. A square coffee table can be placed next to a love seat with rounded corners and fluffy edges. The juxtaposition of the angles and design lend themselves perfectly to a post-modern look without a lot of forethought. While the shapes and sizes can be varied, there should be at least some sense of cohesion within the space. This is particularly important, because without it, a well-planned decor can quickly fall apart and look more like a college frat house.

Fabrics and Colors

The key to coordinating the pieces in a post-modern decorated living room is to use colors and fabrics that work well with one another. The colors should be based on a color palette that features three main colors and a few lesser colors. For example, a plush sofa done in dove grey could be easily coordinated with an ultra-modern looking white coffee table that has an antique red urn as the centerpiece. All three styles will blend together when there are then shades of those colors and textures in other areas of the room. Red and white throw pillows on the sofa and a grey area rug under the table would help tie the look together. Remember, the colors should all be in the same undertone and complement one another naturally.

Accent Pieces

As with all styles of decor, the accent pieces that you use in the room can make or break the feel of the space. Although the look of a post-modern living room offers a lot of leeway for varied accessories, they should still coordinate with the rest of the pieces. Use wall art sculptures or prints to help tie the color palette together while including shapes that will help to coordinate the feel of the space. While a grizzly bear metal wall art will stick out like a sore thumb, one well-chosen artwork, such as a classic sunburst metal artwork, can quickly make the room come alive and give you the look that you are after.

Post-modern decor does not have to take a lot of time to plan. It can be an eclectic combination of many of the same pieces that you already own. Use them in a new and varied way to tie them together and before you know it, your living room will have a brand new look. Post-modern decor is not for everyone, but if a sense of whimsy and personality is what you are after in your living room decor, it is the perfect option.
