Decorating a Living Room around Electronics

Although many people think first in terms of furniture and decorative accents like fleur de lis wall art when decorating a living room, electronics also play a large part in the overall visual effect for the room's styling. Electronics also add a lot of functionality to the living room, making it a more useful and enjoyable room for the family to spend time in. Electronics can have a tendency to overpower the decorating style of a room, if not handled carefully. But, if some thought is given to the types of electronics that are desired in the living room, and what the best arrangement would be, a nice overall look can be achieved.

Decorating Methods for Televisions

Most living rooms include at least a television, which can take up a considerable amount of space, depending on the size. Because many families spend a good deal of time in the living room watching the television, careful placement of the television in relation to the overall seating arrangement of the living room is important. In the past, any people choose to put a television in the corner of a room, especially since the bulky depth of traditional television sets fit well into the corner of a room. However, modern flat screen televisions have much more flexibility, and often require no more space than what a simple piece of wall art would need.

Hanging a plasma television on a wall with good visibility is often a popular choice, but this method sometimes looks a bit awkward. You can blend a wall mounted flat screen television into the overall decor of a room by building a shelf underneath it, so that you can arrange other items of interest on the shelf on either side of the television. Surrounding the television with several pieces of metal wall sculpture can also help blend a wall mounted television into the room. If you do have an older style television, placing it in an entertainment center is often the most popular method, since not only does the entertainment center provide good support and height to the television, but it also can provide storage for other electronics, such as a DVD player, game system, or CD player.

Planning for Game Systems

Game systems are also becoming an almost indispensible part of the average family living room area. Games are often enjoyed by all members of the family, so decorating the living room with gaming in mind can add to the usefulness of the room. Although you can certainly use a game system with your primary television, many families prefer to add a second smaller television for the purpose of games, often hidden inside an armoire or in a small entertainment center. This method can allow the rest of the family to watch television, while one or more family members use ear phones to play their favorite games at the same time. Housing the television in an armoire or entertainment center keeps everything neat, tidy and out of view when not being used, while providing ample storage for games and accessories.

Music Systems

Music is also an important consideration for the living room area. Sound systems for the living room can be as simple as a CD player, or could involve surround speakers to provide a more optimum listening experience. When adding a sound system to the living room, take care to place speakers in areas where the wire can be hidden, not only to create a more visually pleasing effect, but also as a safety consideration.
