Balancing Bedroom Decor with Bedside Tables
61
Bedside tables, sometimes referred to as "night stands," are an integral part of most people's bedroom decor. These handy little tables provide a spot for personal bedtime items such as an alarm clock, lamp or your favorite book. Choosing bedside tables is based on personal preference, just as some people prefer wrought iron grilles to moose metal wall art. And although there aren't really any hard and fast rules about how to choose bedside tables, choosing them with care can create a more attractive and balanced look in the bedroom. Here are some tips you can use to get the most out of your bedside tables.
Choosing the Perfect Bedside Table
If you live alone, you might feel as though you only require one bedside table in the bedroom. However, from a visually balanced standpoint, most people prefer the look of one table on each side of the bed. When choosing bedside tables, the height is probably the most important design feature. If the table is too high or too low, it won't be in a convenient location for you to access when you are in bed. If you have a clock on the table, you should be able to reach and see it easily while lying on the bed. If you decide on two bedside tables, you shouldn't feel the need to select two matching pieces unless you want to. For example, you might choose to use a short chest of drawers on one side, and a small table on the other. In fact, using a different bedside table on each side of the bed can create an eclectic look that can be quite nice in the bedroom. However, if you prefer a more traditional decorating style in the bedroom, matching tables may work best.
Bedside Table Styles
In most cases, you'll want to choose bedside tables that blend nicely with the overall style of your bedroom decor. This technique will create a nice visual balance in the room, adding to the overall relaxing look of the bedroom. If you have your bedroom decorated in a cottage style, a wicker bedside table can work nicely. Or, add a classic touch by using a small writing desk on one side of the bed. Add a swing arm lamp and a stack of interesting books for decidedly literary decorating touch. If you prefer a more glamorous decorating style in the bedroom, choose a sleekly designed bedside table. A table with a shiny black lacquer finish or one with glass or metallic decorating accents can add a modern and yet glamorous touch. A small mahogany trunk can also be quite nice as a bedside table, providing convenient and hidden storage for off-season clothing or extra bedding. An unpainted wicker or bamboo table can add a natural touch to your bedroom decor. Add a lamp with a simple paper shade and a potted plant for the perfect finishing touch. If you prefer a simple style of decorating, a plain table or stand can work best. However, if you need extra storage space in the bedroom, choosing a bedside table with drawers or doors is usually the best option. Whichever table you choose, try to keep the items on your beside table to a minimum, to avoid a cluttered look.
