Solar panels are a great way to harness the power of the sun to make your own electricity. Although you can buy very sophisticated solar panels, you can also build your own. You can find kits and instructions both online and in home improvement stores, which you can use to build your own solar panel for a fraction of what it would cost to buy a ready-made solar panel.  These guides sometimes can be found for as little as $50, and for the most part, many people find that they can purchase the building materials that are necessary for around $200.

Calculating Your Solar Needs

Building a solar panel isn’t like hanging a new hot air balloon wall art or silver metal wall decor; it takes a bit of planning and forethought. Before you attempt to build your own solar panel, you should give some thought to what you would like to run with it. Although it may be unlikely that you'll want to build a solar panel (or solar panels) to provide the majority of the power used within your home, every little bit does count. Even if you only use the panel you build to replace a small portion of the electricity you consume, you'll be lowering your monthly electricity bills. You'll also need to evaluate if you have an appropriate place on your property to install the solar panel. If your property is completely shaded, solar power isn't going to be a good option for you. Many people find that the roof of their home ends up being the ideal location, although you might find that your roof isn't angled in the best fashion for maximum exposure to the sun. If this is the case, you might want to plan on installing the solar panel in an area adjacent to your home, angled appropriately.

Choosing a Kit or Instructions

Although many people prefer to purchase a kit, especially if they have no experience with solar panels, there are plenty of companies that sell do-it-yourself instructions and installation guides that can make the process of building and installing your solar panel relatively easy and quick even without an actual kit. Depending on your particular level of skills, you might want to consider purchasing instructions that also include a video tutorial, so that it's easier to follow the instructions. Prices do vary in regards to kits and instructions, as does the quality and clarity of the product, so if possible you'll want to shop around before purchasing one. It can help to do some online research, reading reviews and customer comments, before choosing the kit or instructions that you feel would be best for you.

Other Considerations

When you are evaluating solar panel kits or instructions, you'll want to pay attention to what the finished product looks like. Especially if you are in a residential area, you'll want to end up with an attractive-looking panel that won't detract from the overall look of your home or property, and won't be an eyesore or distraction to your neighbors either. But, be doing your research carefully, and following the instructions provided, your neighbors will more likely be asking you for advice or assistance in building a solar panel of their own.
