Add Organization to your Foyer with Coat Racks
65When friends and family enter your house, the foyer decor is the first thing that they notice about your home. Even if you’ve decorated with contemporary, traditional or coastal metal art, the foyer can fall short on appearance. Since the foyer is where everything from coats, hats, bags, keys and mail gets placed it can be difficult to keep the space organized and tidy. Instead of tossing bags on the floor and throwing mail on the foyer table, use a coat rack to get and keep you organized.
Types of Coat Racks
There are a variety of different coat rack styles that you can choose from to fit your needs. There is the freestanding, rod style that has arms that branch out from the top. This is particularly useful if your foyer is very small and you need a compact rack. Bench style coat racks are also common. Typically, these combine a bench with a rack above or to the sides to provide a spot for storing both your shoes and your coat. There are also traditional wall mounted coat racks. These can either have just pegs or hooks, or they can have a flat shelf above them. Once you decide on the style that works for your space, you are ready to organize your items.
Coats & Hats
Coats and hats are the natural choices for items to be stored on a coat rack, but sometimes it is not practical to do so. If you live in a cold climate and typically wear heavy, bulky coats, you may want to put them in a hall closet instead. A heavy cardigan or non-bulky coat would be better options, as they will take up less space and make the foyer seem less cluttered. But the rack is a great place to store lighter weight coats, scarves, vests and jackets. Hats can either be hung or placed on the flat rack if available.
Mail Bag
Instead of leaving piles of mail all over your foyer, get or sew a large decorative cloth bag with a handle. Hang it on the coat rack and use it to store your mail when you bring it into the house. Even if you plan on going through the mail after you get settled in for the evening, by putting it in the bag you keep the clutter under control and your foyer is ready for any surprise guests.
Box It Up
Decorative shoe boxes found at craft stores are not just for photo storage. Instead, place one on the shelf area of your coat rack and place keys, sunglasses, and other small items that come and go when you leave the house. By keeping the items out of eyesight but close at hand, the foyer will look less cluttered and feel much more organized.
Make an effort to organize your foyer and make it a simple, attractive spot. Not only will guests enjoy coming into your home, but it will also make a big difference when you come home as well. It feels much better to walk into an organized and tidy space than it does to walk into clutter and chaos. With a coat rack and a few simple storage containers, your foyer will be the welcoming space you have always imagined it could be.
